David Ford “I Don’t Care What...

It’s something special when a debut album makes a real impact – we don’t know what to expect – a fresh experience. So when a new name manages to really nail it with their first release, it can’t help but establish a rapport between the musician and the listener. When I first heard David Ford’s “I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I’ve Caused”, it blew me away. A collection of catchy, heartfelt, raw and moving songs, it remains one of my favourite debuts. Tracks like ‘State Of The Union, ‘What Would You Have Me Do‘ and ‘Cheer Up, You Miserable F***’ stand out. But this track is the pinnacle of the album.

Ford had been in the power pop band Easyworld, and after three years of lacklustre sales, he decided to go solo. During 2004, living in various properties in Lewes in Sussex, Ford wrote and recorded the album, mainly in the cellar of his flat. He then mixed the album himself in early 2005. This particular track is a real favourite. Unusually for Ford, it was written, recorded and mixed, all in one day, after he woke up with the tune in his head. He says this is highly unusual for him. Actually, it’s mind-blowing. This is such a beautiful, personal and special song. Memorable in so many ways. He’s recorded many other fantastic albums: “Charge”, “Let The Good Times Roll” and “Songs For The Road” amongst them.

It’s performed here with a band – a little different from the more intimate sound on the album. But it’s a magnificent performance and shows what a masterful musician he is. Ford is touring later this year with a 20th anniversary set of shows highlighting his superb debut. He’s seriously worth checking out.
