There’s nothing quite like the sparks from a campfire to evoke a storytelling atmosphere. The video for ‘Nose on the Grindstone’ by Tyler Childers is moody and simple, as Childers performs by the light of the moon and the campfire flames. Lyrically, the song is like a dialogue between a father and his child; Childers’ words are emotional and personal and his voice is perfect for sharing tales like this: “Now keep in mind that a man’s just as good as his word // It takes twice as long to build bridges you’ve burnt // And there’s hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal // Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills.” Childers’ songcraft is sublime, and he draws us effortlessly into his narrative. Meanwhile, the haunting guitar and sustained notes from the keys are captivating. Be absorbed.
Childers’ new album, “Snipe Hunter”, is due for release on 25th July 2025. Produced by Rick Rubin, the 13-song collection is notable for the inclusion of fan-favourite ‘Nose on the Grindstone‘, a song that has been popular on the road for some years. If you want to catch Childers live in the UK this year, he’ll be appearing at London’s O2 Arena on 15th November with The Magic Numbers providing superb support – something to brighten those autumnal evenings later this year.
